38th annual dia de los muertos celebration and art exhibition: "revival"

Dia De Los Muertos or Day of The Dead is a Mexican celebration and a day of remembering loved ones who are no longer with us. And in more recent years they have begun to share memories of the veterans lost at war. Ofrenda's or alters (consisting of four sides, which include the four seasons of life, the four points of earth, four season's and four mathematical points, based upon the pyramids), food offerings, mascara's or painted masks, calaveras de azucar or sugar skulls, flowers and photographs of the beloved are placed on the ofrendas.

Annually, on November 2nd, Self Help Graphics & Art holds their legendary Day Of The Dead celebration. It is the country's first organization to create a free to the public festival through the leadership of the Chicano movement, characteristic of East Los Angeles artists. 2011 is a very special year in that Self Help Graphics is celebrating a new home in Boyle Heights. Although I could not attend the actual opening festivities, I was very fortunate in that throughout the month of November, Self Help Graphics showcases this year's themed exhibition "Revival" curated by Patssi Valdez.
