the elephant seal colony

the beach at piedras blancas, a little over 4 miles north of san simeon . 

in the fall, the female elephant seals come to point piedras blancas beach to give birth and breed for about 2 months and the rest of the year in the deep sea. the males spend 8 months at sea and 4 on land. here are two elephant seals play fighting and staking out their territory.

when the adult seals arrive, the young seals leave and go to sea. the beach is predominantly female seals waiting for a chance to mate. sounds a little like los angeles!
