opening reception for year of the rabbit:stan sakai's "usagi yojimbo"
Stan Sakai is a third generation Japanese American born in Kyoto, Japan, raised in Hawaii and went on to school at the Art Center College in Pasadena. He grew up reading American comic books and went to samurai movies where he became interested in Akira Kurosawa's "Yojimbo" and "Seven Samurai", which became a major influence in creating "Usagi Yojimbo". A story about a samurai rabbit in feudal Japan in the late 16th and early 17th century. Stan has been a comic who does ALL his writing, pencilling, inking and lettering for over 25 years. He has won 3 Eisner Awards, which is the highest honor of the American comic book industry.
